Earthwatch Institute

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization. Founded in Boston, it now has offices in Oxford, England, Melbourne, Australia and Tokyo, Japan. Fifty thousand members and supporters are spread across the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. 3,500 of its members volunteer their time and skills to work with 120 research scientists on our Earthwatch field research projects in over 48 countries all around the world.

Earthwatch is MIC's signature volunteer program. Every year MIC sponsors employees to participate in environmental research projects around the world. Volunteers apply to participate and are chosen by lottery.

Global Coral Reef Conservation Project

In 2005 Mitsubishi Corporation launched the Global Coral Reef Conservation Project, which supports coral reef research in Okinawa, Japan, Silhouette Island, The Seychelles, and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in the U.S. Approximately four volunteers from MC operations in the Americas are selected annually to assist researchers from the University of California, Santa Cruz as they investigate the effects of global climate change on coral reefs in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Appalachian Mountain Club's Mohican Outdoor Center

The Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) has been an active Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) program in the Boston area for many years. The MC Foundation for the Americas funded the expansion of the program into New York, Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia. In this area, YOP helps to get urban young people into the outdoors by having AMC staff members and New York-North Jersey and Delaware Valley Chapter volunteers to train leaders of inner-city youth groups to be outdoor activity leaders for their organizations.

In the past, MIC volunteers went to AMC's Mohican Outdoor Center (MOC) located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area spending the weekend doing trail work and facility and equipment maintenance. In 2006, MIC employees joined thousands of volunteers cleaning up coastlines around the world as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day near AMC's Fire Island, New York facility. Volunteers collected refuse along the shoreline, such as beverage containers, cigarettes and plastic bags.

MS Walk - National Multiple Sclerosis Society

The MS Society's mission is to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. With a goal to raise awareness and funds for the MS Society, MIC employees come together every spring to join the MS Walk in various cities.

New York Cares Day

New York Cares Day is organized in joint partnership with the New York Board of Education to help make the City's schools a brighter and cleaner place to learn and play. Every October MIC volunteers participate in this hands-on service by painting walls, hallways, doors, murals and schoolyard grounds. Other activities include revitalizing libraries, classrooms and gardens.
